I had never had homemade vanilla ice cream until I married into my husbands family. They make many flavors for all the summer parties. And upon tasting the amazing array of homemade ice cream flavors that first family party, I immediately thought, why don’t we made homemade ice cream all the time? It tastes WAY better than anything I have ever bought at the store.
And now, with so many electric ice cream makers on the market, it is so easy to enjoy homemade ice cream any time you want it. I have a Whynter 2 qt ice cream maker. There are many ice cream machines that are less expensive and would work just fine. Just make sure that if you don’t have a 2 qt capacity, you alter this recipe to fit your machine.
There are just a few simple ingredients to keep on hand when making homemade vanilla ice cream. Whipping cream, half and half, sugar, and vanilla is all you need. Simply mix, pour, and wait. In about 60 minutes, you will have delicious homemade vanilla ice cream. And for a family with allergies, this is an essential kitchen appliance. I don’t have to worry about cross contamination. That gives me the peace of mind I need. Just simple real ingredients.
Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
Equipment
- 1 electric ice cream maker 2 qt capacity
- 1 large bowl
- spatula, measuring cups & spoons, etc
Ingredients
- 2 3/4 C half & half
- 1 1/3 C granulated sugar
- 1 3/4 C whipping cream I don't use heavy, just regular
- 1 tsp vanilla
Instructions
- In a large bowl, pour the half and half. Add the sugar and stir well. This will take several minutes for the sugar to dissolve into the half and half. Don't rush this. The ice cream won't turn out right if you don't dissolve your sugar completely. This should take 3-4 minutes of stirring.
- Add the whipping cream and stir. Add the vanilla and stir.
- Carefully pour mixture into ice cream maker container. Follow ice cream maker's instructions. {for mine, I just push start. I stop it about 55 minutes or when it starts to really slow down in churning; the full time is 60 minutes}
- Remove ice cream from container using a spatula, and pour into a freezer safe container. Let harden several hours. BUT if you can't wait, you can serve immediately, it will just be more like a soft serve ice cream.
Notes
This recipe is a great base to add in other things too like fresh fruit or candy. You could even add some homemade caramel sauce! The options are endless.
Have fun creating summer treats for your family. Or if you are like my family, we eat ice cream year round.
Much love,
Emma
