I am sure you all love the new Mint Oreos like I do. And what better way to use them than in Mint Oreo Ice Cream. If you have watched the Great British Baking Show, then you know they sometimes use cute electric ice cream makers to make their magical treats. Mine isn’t cute or little, but it does make magical treats.
I have a Whynter electric ice cream maker. Mine has a 2 qt capacity. This one by Cuisinart is smaller in size, but has the same capacity, so I am sure it would also work great. It’s also less than half the price of the one I have. I absolutely love making my own ice cream. Controlling my ingredients is the number one reason I bought this almost 2 years ago. If you have cream, half and half, sugar and vanilla, you are just 45 minutes away from fresh, homemade vanilla ice cream.
However, this recipe is for Mint Oreo because that is what I made most recently. I’ll post vanilla soon! If you don’t want to add mint oreo, just sub the one cup of that ingredient with any other cookie or some fresh fruit. Yum! There is a trick to fresh fruit, and I will also post that later. I have the BEST strawberry ice cream recipe.
As with any electric ice cream maker, they should come with recipes. I happened to like my original recipe from when I used an ice cream maker with salt and ice. I just adapted it until it worked for this smaller capacity and churn style. I hope you will enjoy making this Mint Oreo Ice Cream.
Mint Oreo Ice Cream
Equipment
- 1 2 quart capacity electric ice cream machine
- 1 large bowl
- measuring cups and spoons, spoon, etc
- rolling pin or something to crush oreos with
Ingredients
- 3 C half and half
- 1 1/3 C granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 C whipping cream I don't like to use heavy, just regular
- dash vanilla extract
- 1 C crushed gluten free mint oreos or regular oreos
Instructions
- Gather your ice cream maker. Crush the Oreos and set aside.
- In a large bowl, pour half and half and sugar. Mix well. This is important! You want all the sugar to be dissolved into the half and half.
- Add the whipping cream and stir. Add vanilla. Stir.
- CAREFULLY pour this liquid into the ice cream maker pan. Then place it in your ice cream maker and push start. Mine counts down from 60 minutes.
- After 10 minutes time, pause the machine and add the crushed Oreos. Push start again. Let ice cream maker continue until the time is out or your machine starts to sound really slow. Mine usually takes about 50-55 minutes total.
- Immediately scrape out the ice cream into a container for freezing. Let finish hard freezing for at least 2 hours if desired. We often eat it right away, but it is very soft when it is first done and melts quickly! It will harden up really well if you put it in the freezer for a couple hours. Take out of freezer about 15 minutes before serving.
Making homemade ice cream is a family tradition for us. I hope this can become a new family tradition for you too.
