Making your own taco seasoning is inexpensive, easy, and a great way to ensure it is gluten free. Buying seasonings that are safe in bulk will help you save money. I personally use McCormick seasonings. They are gluten free and easy to buy in bulk on Amazon like their Dark Chili Powder. For my sea salt, I only use Anasazi Salt.
I love to use this taco seasoning not only to make tacos, but I season my shredded chicken with this too. It is perfect for nachos, quesadillas, bean dip, and so much more! See my instructions at the bottom of this post after the recipe.
Without further delay, here is the simple recipe. I often double this because we make tacos all the time.
Taco Seasoning
Equipment
- 1 glass canning jar
- 1 measuring spoon
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 TBSP dark chili powder
- 1 TBSP cumin
- 1 TBSP oregano
- 1 TBSP paprika
- 1 TBSP onion powder
- 1 TBSP garlic powder
- 1 TBSP sea salt my favorite is Anasazi Salt
- 1/2 TBSP black pepper
- few dashes cayenne pepper
Instructions
- Simply measure each seasoning and add it to the jar. Then place the lid on and shake well. You may have to stir with a spoon to make sure to get it mixed completely.
- I usually use 1 TBSP for ground beef per pound of meat, and 1 1/2 TBSP per pound for my shredded chicken.
I hope you enjoy making this! I just love looking at this mixture of seasonings after I make it. It just looks so beautiful. And when dinner feels overwhelming, making something simple and beautiful makes us feel HAPPY!
When I make tacos with ground beef, I brown the meat and drain. Then I add about 1/4 C of water plus 1 TBSP of this seasoning per 1 lb of meat. Stir and heat through. Use this for tacos, nachos, quesadillas, etc.
I love using this taco seasoning for shredded chicken. You can find my recipe for Taco Seasoned Shredded Chicken here.
