Spaghetti Sauce, noodles, and meat on a plate

Homemade GF Spaghetti Sauce

I have been making this spaghetti sauce for over 10 years. No jar spaghetti sauce can compare to homemade sauce. You just can’t get that same flavor. This sauce has simple ingredients that everyone has on hand. This sauce is a thicker spaghetti sauce. If you prefer a thinner sauce, simply add a bit more water to the sauce when cooking. This sauce is also versatile. I add spinach when I have it, or mushrooms that I’ve sautéed. Those vitamin packed veggies help you get added nutrients into your family’s diet without them ever tasting them. I love the depth that spinach and mushrooms can give this sauce too.

And if you like to think about food storage…and we all need to do that, but especially as celiacs we definitely do, this is great recipe to keep ingredients on hand. I worry about emergencies, natural disasters, and making sure that I can feed my kids. Tomato sauce/paste will keep longer on your shelf than prepared spaghetti sauce. So learning how to make your own can save you money and help you be prepared if there was a time you couldn’t get food.

  • Stir all together, and bring to a boil. Then turn heat down to low, and let simmer for 10 minutes with the lid on. This sauce will get hot and bubble, so be careful when you take the lid off to stir.
  • After the 10 minutes, blend the sauce using an immersion blender.

  • Serve with gluten free pasta- we like Barilla gf pasta. Some of my kids like meat, others don't. When I'm in a hurry, it's just ground beef, other times, I'll make some yummy meatballs.:). This sauce also works great with chicken parmesan.

Notes

You could sauté carrots to achieve a “sweeter” sauce.  My husband is allergic to some veggies, like carrots, so we don’t use them.  But my Dad, who lived in Italy for 2 years, always puts shredded carrots in his spaghetti sauce, and I love it!

Our family’s favorite pasta so far, and we’ve tried a lot, is Barilla GF spaghetti noodles. One thing to note with gf noodles like these, is they will continue to cook after you drain the water. They will turn into mush. So truly, you do not want to over cook these! I like to salt my boiling water, and add 1-2 TBSP of good olive oil too. Then after adding my pasta, I use two forks to gently stir and break up the pasta as it cooks. Just keep an eye on the noodles. Having a very large pot with plenty of water for the noodles to be separated in is helpful too. I always regret it when I try to cook to many noodles in a pot that isn’t large enough. When the noodles are al dente, drain the water quickly, then add more olive oil to the noodles and gently stir. Try to time your noodles to be done right before dinner is ready. The amazon link is about 8 cents MORE per box than my local Walmart. But if you are having trouble getting the noodles where you live, this is a good option.

I hope that you will give this recipe a try and let me know how you like it. Some of my kids have texture issues, and feeding them can be frustrating, and for them it is frustrating because they are hungry. By puréeing this sauce, they are happy because there are no chunks. I am happy because it’s easy, and I’m sneaking in veggies that they would never choose to eat because of their texture concerns.

This goes nicely with my homemade rolls, and nice salad, and some fresh fruit.
